Netflix Announces Mariah Carey Will Be The Opening Act For The NFL's Christmas Day Games As Roger Goodell Continues To Beat Down Adam Silver And The NBA

Netflix- The holidays are synonymous with twinkling lights, glad tidings, and the emergence of a pop superstar who rings in the season on a high note — and the first few bars of a certain inescapable Christmas tune. It’s only fitting, then, that Mariah Carey will open the show at the first-ever NFL Christmas Gameday live on Netflix on Dec. 25. 

Her performance on NFL Christmas Gameday will air ahead of the live games: The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. ET, and the Baltimore Ravens will take on the Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. 

Did Goodell do it again or did Goodell do it again? Actually scratch that because we only use that saying for people we like on this website. Still though, it's hard to think anything other than the NFL going for the NBA's throat by having the Voice of Christmas kick things off before both slate of games begin (I know Knicks/Spurs is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET, but let's be honest, the NBA neverrrrrrrr starts games even close to on time, let alone on big holidays. So I bet Mariah is done singing before Wemby and KAT are standing at halfcourt for a jump ball).

Not only did the NFL nail this move from a PR standpoint, but they even crushed it from a performance angle.

Fresh off of her largest and most spectacular Christmas tour to date, Carey is set to dazzle fans this year with a taped performance of her record-breaking single, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” 

Look, I love Mariah as much if not more than the next guy to the point I have "All I Want For Christmas Is You" as the only Christmas song that is allowed to be played year round because it is that good. However, I've seen enough live Mariah performances on TV over the last decade to know that Mariah singing live doesn't always result in Mariah singing best. Letting her nail all her notes with the safety net of cutting and editing is best for everyone.

Plus, there will be someone else performing live that will likely take over your Twitter feed with their fans losing their shit.

Carey isn’t the only music superstar you’ll be able to see on Netflix that day: Beyoncé will perform in her hometown of Houston during the Ravens-Texans halftime. 

Two of the biggest names in the history of music singing as four of the best football teams on the planet square off in potential playoff previews is a pretty decent way to take over a holiday once owned by another league. Whether you hate him or really hate him (since nobody other than the owners that wheel him out as their stooge can actually love him), there is no denying this dickhead plays for keeps.

P.S. If Netflix doesn't fix the streaming issues they had during the Tyson/Paul fight by Christmas, they might as well get out of the sports streaming game for good because Americans can deal with a lot of bullshit, including staying up late to watch the worst boxing match of all-time. But they will burn your HQ down if you rob them of their footbaw.
